Case Study: Discovery Europe EMEA

Brief

16 directors from 15 countries were chosen to make compelling short stories for the Discovery Europe EMEA market. Pretzel was commissioned to create "Clean Graffiti".

Pre-Production

Matt Fretwell directed the film with Dan Trapp as D.O.P. They decided to shoot on a Sony Z1 HD DVcam with prime lenses to create a gritty urban feel but still capturing the beauty of the image that Moose, the graffiti artist, was creating. They also used a stills camera rigged straight opposite the wall to create a timelapse to incorporate into the edit.

Shoot

The right location was key to this film. The wall Moose was to work on had to be the right texture for him to make his mark strong and clear enough and at the same time look visually appealing through the lens of the camera. Production chose Moorgate in the City area of London which worked very well and enabled the team to gain some varied and interesting feedback from members of the public. The film was shot over 2 days.

Post-Production

The edit took approximately 5 days to do. After the first viewing the client was more than happy with the direction we were taking the film. After one more day in the edit, we had final sign off from Discovery. The final edit incorporated expertise grading by Matt himself and an audio mix which was done out of house. Some clever fast paced editing and music to match helped to create the right feel to the film, one that was appropriate for the Discovery channel Shorts and the Discovery audience it was intended for.
